We Are Running

Week 2

January 14, 2008 · 4 Comments

OK … so we’re on to week two.  We’re up to running 30 minutes per run (except for me maybe) which is great progress.  We’ll stick here for a few weeks to build up our mileage …

Wow, it was really cold this morning – in the twenties. So, a little treadmill training at the gym (I haven’t been inside in about 3 months). Still, there are pros and cons to running inside.

Pros: it is warm, it’s easier on the knees, you can monitor exactly how far and fast you are going, and manually increase / reduce your speed.

Cons: it is pretty boring, the guy running next to me was singing along to his iPod and blowing his nose constantly, you can monitor exactly how far and fast you are going.

I don’t like running on the treadmill because it tricks you into running outside of your plan. It taunts you to push the button to run a little faster, or just run until the next mile. This makes it particularly hard to stick to your game plan. I won the war today. I only ran for 22:30 minutes, at a pace of between 10 and 11 minute miles. I wanted to take it easy due to my hyper-sensitivity around the knee.

So, Week 2, Run 1 complete.

By the way … Check out the We are running … and begin! post from 1.11. We have our second supporter from outside the group – Keith Peltzman left a comment.

Keith is a lifelong runner, and also owns a solar business called independence solar. Check it out.

so … 2nd run of the week complete. had to run inside again today. up’d the time to 25:00 and the knee felt pretty good. i’m probably going to stick in the 20’s two times a week for the next couple weeks just to make sure I don’t get an early injury.

hope everyone else is still on schedule …

    Winter Running-

I am a reformed winter runner. I never ran outside when it dropped below 30 degrees. I hate the cold more than any average Northeasterner. Two things changed – I invested in a Neoprene warm-up jacket. It completely blocks out the wind and chill and keeps your body heat inside the jacket. Once you are past the first minute, you are golden. Second, I lived in Boston for 2 years and people run there at any temperature. So, you feel more like a wuss and it is below 30 from Dec-Feb, so you have no choice. Philly winters feel breezy now. This is the first fierce cold spell we have had yet. Tough it out or take a few on the treadmill. It will pass and we will be back in the 40’s soon. Hope training is going well for everyone.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, KP. And thanks for calling us out as wusses! Jen and I did another treadmill training session this morning. It’s tough rolling out of a warm bed into the coldness along the river – although, the gym ain’t much fun either. Anyway, we are running, and that’s good – hope to get outside again soon.
